Goldberg said, when a fellow discussant brought up the recent decision in a Tennessee school district to remove Maus from educational material: “Well, this is White people doing it to White people, so y’all gonna fight amongst yourselves,”. When Arab, British, Portuguese and other traders went to West Africa and purchased slaves who’d been captured and brought to market by West Africans, was this victimization and was it racism? Or was it a beef between two groups of Black people? Obviously, it was the former.
More crucially, her words are an effort to present the Holocaust as a conflict between two sides or parties. Never mind that it was literally not about TWO groups not only Germany was fascist and not only Jews were marked for eradication. It is the idea that the genocide was between “two White groups of people”. She does this because she is engaging in competitive victimhood and wants to be clear that nobody’s people have hurt like her people.īut the real horror of Goldberg’s words is not in the false notion that the Holocaust was not about race. She doesn’t make this mistake because she just hasn’t been exposed to enough historical information. Americans in 2022 may consider Jews white but this was not the predominant view of race and Jews in Europe in the 1920s-40s. Goldberg, defining Jews (and Roma and Sinti) as “White” is an anachronism. Jews aren’t the most marginalized people today in Goldberg’s town, therefore there’s no context in which genocide is serious enough to be discussed on The View. Racism can only count when aimed at certain victims.
This effort to present genocide and the government-organized torture and rape of ethnic minorities deemed racially inferior as something other than racism comes from a current ideology in American thought that only certain people can ever be victims and some people’s suffering matters more than others’. Goldberg declared that the Holocaust “wasn’t about race” and that it was between “two groups of white people”.
